Shower Head FAQs

Should I get a shower water filter?

1st get purified water to drink, not just tap water because of the fluorination, before even considering purifying your shower water. You have to have priorities, and that tap water could be pretty bad.

There is not much of a debate about shower filters, they do a good job at what they do, which is mostly removing chlorine and heavy metals. If you don’t have a filter it is easy to see how much build up and crust sticks to the walls and fixtures of the bathroom in a short period of time. That same stuff sticks to your skin too, but that’s not even the worst part.

The heat from the shower can vaporize chlorine. This poisonous gas can then be breathed by the bather causing a wide variety of symptoms and lung damage. It is best to remove this completely so be sure t find a filter that removes as much as possible if not all of it.

What is the most high-tech shower head?

Your probably thinking I’m going to say something about the space shuttle, and I guess I just did, but actually there isn’t a shower on that shuttle. The most high tech shower head is the entirely digital shower from Grohe Ondus. Well, it’s not all digital, there is still water involved, but all the controls and even the appearance is digital. It has a number of features such as programmed shower times and temperatures, cell phone connection, music, weather, and even the controls for the nozzle variations all in a backlit waterproof touchscreen. Jorge Jettson is waiting.

I keep hearing about this bacteria that gets into shower heads and can cause lung problems. What’s the scoop?

You are talking about a genetic study of common household appliances where they discovered an abundance of Mycobacterium avium. M.Avium can cause a number of problems to those with pre-existing conditions such as AIDs, cystic fibrosis, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

It is impossible to clean out once it exists in the shower head. This doesn’t mean you need to go and replace all your shower heads just yet. If you are in good health M.Avium won’t have any effect on you and it cannot be caught from someone else of passed on. Regular replacement of the head is recommended, but the timeframe is unclear.

The best thing to do is simply turn the water on before entering the shower as the first burst may have the most contaminants in it, or take a bath. A bath is less likely to vaporize the bacterium allowing it to be breathed in.
